What are fixed braces?

Fixed braces are the great option for straightening teeth, achieving excellent results for a variety of orthodontic issues. We can align crooked teeth, close gaps, resolve overcrowding and even treat more complex problems with your bite. Straighter teeth can also improve your oral health.

We now use brackets that are smaller, faster and more effective than ever before, with our modern techniques guaranteeing your teeth straightening journey will be comfortable and successful.

We can offer traditional metal braces or ceramic (clear) options which are discreet and comfortable.

How do fixed braces work?

Fixed braces consist of ceramic or metal brackets fitted to the surface of your teeth for the duration of your treatment. A wire attached through each bracket works to guide your teeth into new straighter positions.

During your treatment, you have regular appointments for us to check your progress and adjust the braces. Your teeth move gradually, typically taking anywhere from three to twelve months to achieve your dream smile. Quicker results can be achieved with Fastbraces®

The best bit for us is watching you see your new smile for the first time after the braces are removed. We provide you with a retainer to stop your teeth moving out of position and leave you to start smiling with pride!

What our patients say

Was an amazing experience since the first appointment where I had my dental plan put in place. Was super understanding with my situation and what work I wanted to have done. All the staff I had met during my 3 appointments were very nice and provided a great service overall.

Great practice and would highly recommend!! I had been going to another dentist for a while but didn’t seem to explain anything or help me with options. Decided to come to Eccleshill Dental. Was amazed. I had a 40 min examination and then went through all my issues. They broke it down to things that I ‘needed’ to do and then discussed things that might ...

I would like say a massive thank you to Karan at Eccleshill Dental for giving me the confidence to smile again. The dental work I had done was not a straight forward procedure. My teeth needed bleaching and then a new front crown needed to be made to match their new colour. After the course of Enlighten treatment my teeth were temporarily left patchy in ...

FAQs

Are braces painful?

Not really. Placing the brace is completely comfortable but some patients experience some discomfort after the braces are first fitted. This is due to the teeth responding to the movement and the discomfort fades after a few days. Similar discomfort can be sometimes experienced after adjustments. If needed, you can take painkillers such as paracetamol, just as you would for a headache. If your braces rub, we will provide wax to prevent any soreness. We will show how to apply the wax to your brace to keep your mouth problem-free.

Can I remove the brace?

Fixed braces always have to be attached to your teeth during the treatment in order to work properly. The brackets are fixed using a special adhesive which is easily removed when the treatment concludes. If any wires come loose during your treatment, contact us right away and we can fix your brace before the damage stalls the treatment progress.

Are there more discreet options than metal braces?

If you are self-conscious about how metal braces look, our more discreet options may suit you best. We offer fixed braces that use clear brackets and tooth-coloured wires.
If you do not like the idea of metal or ceramic braces, why not consider clear aligner orthodontics like Invisalign. Our dentists will guide you on this as an alternative.

Do I have to change my diet?

There are particular foods and drinks that you should avoid when wearing fixed braces. These are:

  • Sticky foods such as toffee and gum
  • Fizzy drinks with a high sugar count
  • Hard, boiled sweets and other tough confectionary
  • Hard foods that could damage your brace, such as crusty bread

It’s good to avoid any sugary foods and drinks when wearing braces as it’s more likely that sugary deposits will form around the brace and so create more areas for plaque to develop. Cleaning your brace after every meal will prevent most of the bacteria from taking root, but cutting the excess sugar from your diet will also help keep your mouth healthy during the treatment.

Do I have to change my brushing routine?

It’s really important to keep your teeth and braces as clean as possible during your treatment. We will show you the best cleaning techniques to clean around the brackets and wires without damaging them. You can use a special narrow brush to clean small spaces, removing any pesky food deposits that may be missed by your conventional brush.

It’s best to brush after every meal to keep your mouth as clean as possible, removing any food debris before bacteria has the chance to develop.

How long will treatment take?

The length of your treatment completely depends on how severe your case is. For more significant movement, it will take longer as your teeth will have a greater distance to cover. Fixed brace treatment is best for more severe cases and can take between 6-24 months and use of Fastbraces® technology can reduce this further.

Do I still need to see my dentist?

You’ll still need to continue your routine dental care while undergoing orthodontic treatment. It’s important that your dental health is in top shape. Seeing a hygienist is also important to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

What do I do if I play contact sports?

You can have a mouthguard made to protect your braces and teeth. You will need to have one specially made to compensate for the braces and ensure an efficient fit.

What if I play a musical instrument?

Fixed braces may make it harder to play a wind or brass instrument. If you are concerned, speak to your music teacher before choosing to have braces. For some instruments, it’s possible to get used to the braces, but some may make it uncomfortable to play. Alternatively, you could consider aligner orthodontics like Invisalign.
