What are dentures?

Dentures are a way of replacing a missing tooth or teeth using a custom made removable prosthesis. Sometimes called false teeth, they can be in various designs to replace some teeth (a partial denture) or all your teeth (a complete denture).

Benefits include improving how you eat and speak, boosting your confidence and reducing pressure on any remaining teeth. They also massively improve your appearance with a full smile and can enhance your facial shape by naturally recreating the contour around your lips and cheeks. Friends and family will not be able to tell you have dentures!

Dentures are not fixed. They are removable and need to be removed at night when sleeping, meaning they are not the right choice for everyone. Don’t worry though, our dentists will explain the alternate options to dentures which are fixed and permanent. We will guide you to the best choice for you.

We offer a range of dentures including the most up to date materials, designs and aesthetic options. Dentures are usually made from acrylic, or a combination of acrylic and metal, and even a softer flexible (Valplast) material. Again, our team will guide you on what is best for you.

What does the treatment involve?

At your initial consultation, we set out your treatment plan and take impressions of your mouth, so the process of creating your highly accurate and precise dentures can start.

Usually over a few appointments, our dentists shape, amend and check your dentures to ensure they are comfortable, well fitting and beautiful. They work closely with experienced denture technicians to construct your dentures, ensuring you are involved and happy throughout.

We give you some advice on how best to look after your dentures. After a couple of weeks, we usually see you again to check your dentures are still comfortable in your mouth, and you are enjoying your new smile.

Was an amazing experience since the first appointment where I had my dental plan put in place. Was super understanding with my situation and what work I wanted to have done. All the staff I had met during my 3 appointments were very nice and provided a great service overall.

Great practice and would highly recommend!! I had been going to another dentist for a while but didn’t seem to explain anything or help me with options. Decided to come to Eccleshill Dental. Was amazed. I had a 40 min examination and then went through all my issues. They broke it down to things that I ‘needed’ to do and then discussed things that might ...

I would like say a massive thank you to Karan at Eccleshill Dental for giving me the confidence to smile again. The dental work I had done was not a straight forward procedure. FAQs

What does the procedure involve?

Initially, accurate impressions are taken of your mouth. These will be given to our trusted dental laboratory, where expert technicians create models of your mouth. From this, they will make a wax denture for you to try in, and work with our expert dentist to decide on the best possible comfort, aesthetics and stability. If there are any amendments to be made, the information will be sent to the technician with instructions for crafting your permanent dentures. Your dentist will then ensure your new dentures are fitted comfortably and look natural before completing treatment.

Sometimes, tooth extraction, fillings or gum disease treatment may be necessary before proceeding with dentures. This will be assessed and discussed with you at your initial appointment. When any necessary prior treatment is complete and your dentist is happy with your oral health, they will take impressions to start the denture process.

How long does it take to have dentures made?

Treatment can take anything from a few days to 4 weeks, depending on current oral health, materials to be used, the technician and the quality of the denture. Temporary dentures can sometimes be made in a day for use during the waiting period but these will not be as perfectly fitted as your own crafted dentures.

Are there any complications with dentures?

It often takes days and sometimes a few weeks to acclimitise to new dentures. They are new to you and your mouth so you will need time to get used to them. They may rub and pinch initially, and take time to become stable in your mouth. Our dentists usually review patients after a couple of weeks to make any tweaks, if necessary.

A denture that is not fitted correctly can cause swollen and irritable gums. Your mouth can also change over time which may result in a loose fitting denture. These can be addressed with modifications of your old denture or the making of a new denture.

Do I need full dentures?

Full dentures are used when all of your teeth are missing or have been extracted due to infection. Extra stability can be achieved using dental implants which secure your dentures into place, something many people are now finding hugely beneficial.

Do implant-retained dentures provide any other benefits?

Implant-retained dentures provide a high level of stability, functionality and comfort that is unrivalled. Patients with this type of denture welcome the ease of eating, speaking and maintaining oral health and liken it to having natural teeth. Bone loss is also slowed down significantly.

What is a partial denture?

These are used when only a few teeth are missing. They can stop the healthy surrounding teeth moving into the gaps after tooth loss, maintaining the stability of your mouth and smile.

Are dentures still made using acrylic?

There is a choice of materials with each one having benefits and disadvantages:

Acrylic

Most dentures are made from an acrylic/resin mix as it has the lowest cost. It is long lasting, durable and if your denture becomes loose over time due to changes in your gums, a copy of your denture can be easily made and re-fitted. They tend to be the thickest of all the denture types which means they feel more unnatural compared with other denture types.

Chrome

Chrome dentures provide a thinner base and often a better fit. However, they are more expensive than acrylic/resin dentures and take a longer length of time to make.

Their base is made from thin, comfortable but very strong Cobalt Chrome with natural coloured gums and teeth. They are more stable and retentive. The use of the metal Chrome (even if it is not visible) is not preferred by some patients.

Valplast

Valplast dentures offer flexibility in movement and thus patients report they are far more comfortable to wear than other dentures. The components of the special material allow for a thinner denture to be made but it is still strong and durable. Valplast dentures are also more natural looking and blend in with gums more effectively.

How can I help adjust to my dentures?

It can take a little while to get used to your new dentures, especially if they are a complete set. They may feel odd at first and eating can be tricky, so it may be a good idea to start with softer foods and slowly introduce more challenging items. The amount of saliva in your mouth may increase, but this should soon improve as your mouth gets used to your replacement teeth.

Initially, speaking may be difficult but you can improve this by reading aloud and if you are experiencing any sore spots in your mouth, the denture surface may need some adjustment.

How do I look after my dentures?

Dentures are designed to be hard-wearing, but they will last longer if you treat them with care. Dentures should be removed before you go to bed so your gums can have a rest, but they must be stored in water or denture fluid as they could lose their shape if allowed to dry out.

Clean your dentures with a toothbrush or a special denture brush and remember to keep your gums and any remaining teeth clean too. You will also need to attend regular check-ups so your dentist and hygienist can keep an eye on your oral health.
