Teeth naturally start to lose their sparkle over time, becoming stained and yellow in appearance. This is worsened by factors including frequently drinking or eating dark and rich coloured food and liquid, smoking, certain medications and ageing. Whitening treatment can dramatically enhance your smile by removing stains, reversing this discolouration and brightening your smile to dazzling new heights.
In many cases, whitening is all you need to transform your appearance and help you find your confident smile again.

FAQs
What is tooth whitening?
Whitening combats the natural processes which cause teeth to become less white and darker in colour. As we age, our teeth naturally become darker and more yellow. In addition, elements in our diet can stain our teeth, especially drinks heavy in tannins such as red wine, tea and coffee. Smoking also stains the teeth. Whitening acts to safely break down these stains and brightens your teeth, restoring them to their former, whiter glory.
How does this work?
Tooth whitening uses the process of a safe chemical reaction where the whitening agent reacts and releases oxygen, breaking down stain molecules that are trapped under the tooth enamel or stuck in the tooth surface. This means the teeth lighten and brighten!
What tooth whitening treatments are available?
Tooth whitening options come in the form of home kits, tooth pastes or professional bleaching by a dentist, either through internal or external whitening.
Whitening toothpastes and teeth whitening kits that can be bought in shops or online often only provide very small improvements and may not be necessarily the best option for you.
In addition, there may be other dental or medical health reasons that cause your teeth to discolour which can only be assessed by a professional, thereby ensuring you receive the most appropriate and effective programme of dental care and whitening.
Are there alternatives to tooth whitening?
Yes and No!
We recommend a thorough hygiene appointment and airflow stain removal prior to tooth whitening which removes all plaque, tartar and surface staining, and will brighten your smile. However, this removes staining on the surface and will not lighten the actual colour of your teeth or change the yellow shade. You will need professional tooth whitening to change the shade and colour of your teeth.
Sometimes, Composite Bonding, Veneers or Crowns can be placed on your teeth as alternatives to tooth whitening. These will be designed and constructed just for you and can be made to any brighter shade. This will create a fantastic bright, natural and beautiful smile. These options have their own benefits and negatives, and our dentists will discuss this with you.
Is tooth whitening safe?
Tooth whitening is a safe process providing it is undertaken by a professional dentist who will advise and demonstrate how to whiten your teeth. During the tooth whitening process, often your teeth can become sensitive but this settles after the treatment has completed.
Who does the tooth whitening procedure involve?
Our expert dentists will examine your teeth and gums and discuss your tooth whitening needs and options. Once landed, we will take impressions or digital scans of your teeth if appropriate to have the custom made trays made. We will make a further appointment for you in 1-2 weeks time when your trays arrive so the dentist can check the trays fit correctly before starting tooth whitening that day.
How do I care for my teeth after treatment?
Minimising your intake of things that discolour your teeth i.e. drinking coffee, red wine and smoking is recommended. You should also attend for regular dental health examinations and hygiene appointments to assess and maintain your oral health.
We also recommend you periodically ‘top-up’ your whitening using your existing custom made trays to maintain your bright smile!
Is there any reason why I might not be able to have tooth whitening?
Whitening gels can irritate damaged teeth and gums and also prevent healing. Gum disease and tooth decay should always be treated before tooth whitening is considered.
Can I have my teeth whitened when I’m pregnant?
Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should avoid tooth whitening due to the possible effect of the gel on the growing child.
What if I have crowns or veneers?
Tooth whitening will not lighten crowns, veneers or dentures. We advise patients who want to have teeth whitening to proceed with an awareness that they may wish to replace crowns, veneers or dentures if they do not match with the new brighter shade of your teeth.
How long does tooth whitening last?
Tooth whitening lasts for many years. Teeth always remain susceptible to discolouring so we recommend periodically ‘topping up’ your whitening to maintain the bright shade.
The rate of discoloration varies based on your lifestyle choices, diet, overall health and oral hygiene. Remember that if you go ahead with custom made trays then the dentist will advise on the top up whitening methods to help you maintain your new smile.
What are the costs of tooth whitening?
The cost depends on the type of tooth whitening procedure you choose, which can be discussed when you meet one of our cosmetic dentists. They will work with you to understand your preferences and advise on the most appropriate method to help you achieve the results you desire.
